Art-Net

Art-Net is an Ethernet-based lighting control protocol originally developed by Artistic Licence to transport DMX lighting data over standard computer networks. Introduced in the late 1990s, Art-Net was one of the first widely adopted methods for replacing long DMX cable runs with Ethernet while maintaining compatibility with existing DMX equipment.

Today, Art-Net is commonly found in professional stage lighting, architectural lighting, themed attractions, and many DIY Christmas lighting controllers. While many hobbyists now prefer DDP or E1.31 (sACN) for large pixel displays, Art-Net remains a widely supported protocol for both pixel and DMX lighting applications.

History

Traditional DMX networks use dedicated RS-485 serial connections that are limited to a single DMX universe per cable. As lighting systems grew larger, running multiple long DMX cables became increasingly expensive and difficult to manage.

Art-Net was developed to solve this problem by transmitting DMX data across standard Ethernet networks. Controllers located throughout a display receive Art-Net packets and convert them back into standard DMX signals or directly control smart pixels.

Although newer Ethernet lighting protocols have since been introduced, Art-Net remains widely supported because of its long history and broad compatibility with professional lighting equipment.

How Art-Net Works

Sequencing software such as xLights or show players like Falcon Player (FPP) generate lighting data and send it across an Ethernet network using the Art-Net protocol.

Lighting controllers receive these Art-Net packets and use the information to control pixels, DMX fixtures, dimmers, relays, or other lighting devices.

Unlike standard DMX, which requires a dedicated cable for each universe, Art-Net allows many universes to travel over a single Ethernet network.

Universes

Like DMX, Art-Net organizes lighting data into universes.

Each universe contains up to 512 DMX channels.

For pixel lighting, multiple universes are typically combined to control large numbers of smart pixels.

Because Art-Net transports these universes over Ethernet, many universes can coexist on the same physical network.

Broadcast vs. Unicast

Art-Net supports both broadcast and unicast communication.

Broadcast

Lighting data is transmitted to every compatible controller on the network. Each controller processes only the universes assigned to it.

Unicast

Lighting data is sent only to the intended controller. This reduces unnecessary network traffic and is generally preferred for larger lighting displays.

Art-Net vs. DMX512

Although both protocols ultimately control lighting equipment, they operate differently.

Art-Net vs. E1.31

Art-Net and E1.31 both transport lighting data across Ethernet networks and are supported by many modern lighting controllers.

Art-Net was introduced earlier and remains common in professional lighting systems, while E1.31 became an ANSI entertainment lighting standard and is widely used throughout the Christmas lighting hobby.

Most modern controllers support one or both protocols, allowing users to choose whichever best fits their display.

Christmas Lighting Applications

Art-Net is commonly used for:

  • Pixel controllers
  • DMX controllers
  • Stage lighting fixtures
  • Moving-head lights
  • Flood lights
  • Architectural lighting
  • Large synchronized holiday displays

Many sequencing programs allow Art-Net and E1.31 controllers to operate together on the same network.
